I love technology. To see surveying develop from transits and chains to reflectorless robotic total stations is wonderful. It is true that the days of the three to five person field crew are history. I never thought that I would be surveying alone.
You will be amazed when I set the robot on its tripod. The radio link allows communication between me and my robotic station. Once locked on the prism, the station follows me just as an instrument operator would. It saves time by not needing to focus on me. Its infrared light knows what to follow and it aims more accurately than a human can.
Data collection is electronic, nearly eliminating the need for handwritten field notes.
When I need shots in places that are difficult or unsafe, I use the reflectorless mode. It uses the actual surface of the object to which I am measuring as a reflector. This method is safer than trying to measure near electric lines with a metal prism pole.
While it is not much of a conversationalist, my robotic total station is always there for a hard day's work.
Surveysmith uses a Leica Robotic, Reflectorless Total Station. I have tried others, but this one is the best (in my humble opinion). To see the Leica website, click here.
